Cheryl L. Keyes

Greetings! I am excited to welcome all of you back to the new academic year. A special shout out to those who are new to UCLA. It is also great starting off the new year on a high note. According to the U.S. News and World Report, UCLA continues to maintain its position as the No. 1 public university seven years in a row.

In maintaining its staying power as a no. 1 public institution, UCLA’s Department of African American Studies plays a major role in continuing to embrace its long tradition of scholarly excellence, social activism, and creative expressions in the study of Black life. The department also engages thoughtful public programming and events as part of its public outreach, campus-wide and to the nearby community. With its world-class faculty, the Department of African American Studies offers students a wide-range of courses that provide historical, conceptual, and theoretical foundation for understanding Black global experiences. Please take a look at our BA, MA, and MA/JD degree programs in African American Studies.  I encourage each of you to explore UCLA Department of African American Studies online to learn more about our esteemed faculty, accomplished students, and our supportive administrative staff. We look forward to seeing you soon!!!!
