Assistant Professor Shamara W. Alhassan becomes a recipient of the 2025-26 Bunche X Blackbird Academic Writing Fellowship!

ssor Shamara W. Alhassan is a recipient of the 2025-2026 Bunche X Blackbird Academic Writing Fellowship. She joins an inaugural cohort of fellows who will be provided with a 12-month membership to the Blackbird House Flagship of Culver City. The fellowship is designed for early career faculty whose research, teaching and mentorship focus on Black life. With this opportunity, Professor Alhassan is well-poised to complete the final edits of her forthcoming book, Re-Membering the Maternal Goddess: Rastafari Women’s Intellectual History and Activism in the Pan-African World, contracted by the University of Illinois Press. He Wrote the Book on Michael Jordan’s Cultural Influence
/News by afamstaffAdam Bradley was with his daughters at Legoland one day this summer when he noticed a familiar image seemingly everywhere he looked — on the shoes, clothing and even tattoos of people across age, race and gender lines.
The image? Nike’s Jumpman logo, the silhouetted representation of NBA Hall of Famer Michael Jordan leaping through the air, legs splayed wide, a basketball in one hand extended upward.
It would make sense that Bradley, a UCLA professor of English and African American studies, was attuned to all things Jordan during his Legoland excursion. He had, after all, just completed work on a coffee table book called “Air Jordan.” Published this month by Assouline, the volume explores Jordan’s life, legacy and cultural influence.
Jordan is still thought by many to be the greatest basketball player of all time and his on-court achievements are legendary. But his athletic exploits alone don’t explain his continued status as a cultural icon. Bradley said the fact that consumers still gravitate toward a decades-old logo, one inspired by an athlete who played his last professional game 23 years ago — an eternity in pop-culture years — demonstrates Jordan’s unique and enduring impact….click here to read more.
Professor Safiya Noble Receives an Honorary Doctorate:
/News by afamstaffProfessor Safiya Noble, will be the recipient of an honorary doctorate at Leiden University, the Netherlands, granted by its Faculty of Social Sciences. This award becomes another kudo for Professor Noble, a MacArthur Fellow, recognized for her award-winning book, Algorithms of Oppression: How Search Engines Reinforce Racism (NYU Press)” and a recent co-authored article, “Toward a Sociology of Artificial Intelligence: A Call for Research on Inequalities and Structural Change.” The Institute of Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology (CADS) is very much looking forward to hosting you. The honorary doctorates at Leiden University are awarded on the 9th of February 2026 during a large ceremony at the dies natalis or birthday of Leiden University
