UCLA Beyond Bars LA Conference 2022!

This upcoming January 2022 the UCLA Prison Education Project will host the annual Beyond the Bars Los Angeles, conference. The conference will take place from January 14th-16th!

Beyond the Bars LA, is a convening of system-impacted people, scholars, activists, educators, policymakers, and artists engaged in the international decarceration movement. Organized by a team of dedicated Fellows and volunteers in collaboration with university students and faculty, the conference unites a diverse range of allies, artists, activists, advocates, and academics to engage in global initiatives aimed at ending incarceration.

The conference will be a way to re-energize, heal, learn, and play, whilst building community and developing visionary approaches to ending incarceration with diverse participants. Beyond the Bars LA is an opportunity to work together and share strategies in service of abolition and social liberation.

The first day of the conference will be held at Barry J. Nidorf Juvenile Hall as a way to include our incarcerated community. The second day will be open to the community and will showcase contributions ranging from performances, films, panel discussions, and workshops through zoom. This year we are happy to collaborate with a new initiative, Women Beyond Bars, so to end our conference we will be hosting a gathering with over 50 formerly incarcerated women.

Details on the 2022 Beyond the Bars LA Conference are on their website.

The Beyond the Bars LA Conference is primarily funded through co-sponsors from around the UCLA campus and LA community. We are inviting you to be a part of this multi-disciplinary event showcasing the passion of its collaborators, who are daring to envision a world without prisons.

Dean Galvan, the dean of undergraduate students at UCLA, has generously provided this visionary initiative a sum of $10,000.00. Would you like to match her contribution towards this important cause? We would greatly appreciate your participation financially and virtually for our conference scheduled for January 2022. We depend on community members such as yourself to support this cause and continue to fight for a world without mass incarceration.
