Message from the Chair - Cheryl I. Harris

As we embark on this inaugural year of the Department of African-American Studies, I want to acknowledge the historical context out of which it emerged and reflect on the path ahead.  First, I am deeply honored to follow the phenomenal leadership of chairs of the Interdepartmental Program.   Since the founding of the Interdepartmental Program in Black Studies in 1975, we have been aided by the dedication and commitment of fifteen chairs and co-chairs:  Stanley Cohen, Ned Alpers, Armstead Robinson, Halford
